An ornate Art Nouveau double inkstand, made from coppered metal.

  • Overall Form and Material: The inkstand is broad and shallow, with an organic, flowing, and asymmetrical design characteristic of the Art Nouveau period (roughly 1890-1910). The metal appears to be a copper alloy, with a varied patina that emphasizes the high and low relief.
  • Central Figure: The Semi-Nude Maiden: Dominating the upper center of the inkstand is a sculpted semi-nude maiden. She is depicted in a dynamic and elegant pose. Her torso and one leg are visible, draped with flowing fabric that accentuates her form. Her arms are raised, holding the fabric above her head.
  • Inkwell Sections: Flanking the maiden on either side are two lidded circular inkwells. Their lids are textured and have pinecone finials.
  • Integrated Pen Tray: The lower central area of the inkstand forms a large, shallow, recessed pen tray. Its surface is relatively smooth, providing a clear space for pens.
  • Seaside / Aquatic Theme: The entire inkstand is unified by a seaside or aquatic theme, intricately integrated into the Art Nouveau stylization:
    • Fish: Visible among the swirling forms are sculpted fish or marine creatures, their bodies blending with the organic lines.
    • Shells and Fauna: Various shell-like forms, aquatic plants, and other marine fauna are incorporated throughout the design, especially along the edges and surrounding the central maiden and inkwells. The ornamentation curls and undulates like waves or seaweed.
  • The Face in the Front: Positioned centrally at the very front of the inkstand’s base is a prominent sculpted male face, with flowing beard-like features. This face could represent Neptune (Poseidon in Greek mythology), the Roman god of the sea, rivers, and storms.
