- Hallmarks: The presence of the following hallmarks provides definitive information about its origin and date:
- “JW FCW” (Wakely & Wheeler): This is the maker’s mark for Wakely & Wheeler, a highly respected London silversmithing firm known for their quality work.
- London assay office mark: Confirms it was assayed (tested for purity) in London.
- Lion silver mark: The “lion passant” indicates the piece is made of sterling silver (92.5% pure silver).
- Date letter “l” for the year 1906: This hallmark precisely dates the manufacture of the silver component to the year 1906. It’s interesting to note that the trophy was engraved for an event in 1908, meaning it was made two years prior and then customized.
