This inkwell embodies a rich vein of English folklore. Made from bronze, its design weaves together elements of nature and the mystical world of the Dartmoor pixie.
The central figure of the inkwell is an imp-like creature, a Dartmoor pixie. This pixie sits casually atop a tree stump, which forms the main body of the inkwell. The stump displays realistic bark details, with grooves and rough surfaces, grounding the magical figure in a natural setting. The top section of the stump, along with the pixie, is hinged at the back, designed to lift and reveal the ink reservoir within.
The pixie itself has prominent pointed ears, a wide, somewhat mischievous grin, and expressive eyes. Its lean, wiry build and somewhat gnarled hands and feet contribute to its distinct character. Adding to the inkwell’s mystical appeal, the tree stump base is surrounded by seven sculpted toadstools or mushrooms.
The Significance of the Dartmoor Pixie and Toadstools:
The choice of a Dartmoor pixie as the central figure and the inclusion of seven toadstools are rooted in English folklore, particularly that of the Dartmoor region in Devon:
- Dartmoor Pixies (Piskies): These are perhaps Dartmoor’s most famous mythical inhabitants. Unlike some benevolent fairies, Dartmoor pixies are renowned for their mischievous and often frustrating pranks. Their primary pastime is to “pixy-lead” travelers astray, especially during foggy nights, causing them to become disoriented and lost on the treacherous moorland. They are earth-bound, connected to the rugged landscape of Dartmoor. While not evil, their tricks can lead to troublesome situations, reflecting their morally ambiguous nature. The traditional remedy for being pixy-led is to turn one’s coat inside out, confusing the pixies and breaking their spell.
- Toadstools and Fairy Rings: The presence of the seven toadstools is highly symbolic. Groups of mushrooms, particularly toadstools, are intrinsically linked to “fairy rings” or “elfin rings” in folklore. These natural circular formations are believed to be portals to the fairy world, places where magical beings dance and gather. Thus, the seven toadstools on this inkwell reinforce the magical, supernatural, and mischievous world from which the pixie emerges.
