This is a rare 19th-century Persian Qajar lacquered papier mâché Qalamdan pen box, complete with its original slide-on cover and unmarked silver inkwell.
Dynasty: The Qajars were a ruling dynasty in Persia (Iran) from 1789 to 1925.
- Artistic Style: The Qajar period is known for its distinctive artistic style, which blended traditional Persian motifs with European influences. This style is evident in the intricate floral decoration of the pen box.
Qalamdan:
- Pen Box: The term “qalamdan” refers to a pen box or case.
- Calligraphy: Qalamdans were traditionally used to store and protect writing instruments, such as reed pens, ink, and penknives, which were essential for calligraphy.
- Decoration: Qalamdans were often decorated with lacquer, painting, and other embellishments.
- Material: The pen box is constructed from papier mâché.
- Lacquered Finish: Both the box and the cover are coated with a lacquered finish, providing a glossy, protective surface.
- Cover:
- Slide-On Design: The cover is designed to slide on and off the main body of the pen box, providing a secure closure.
- External Lacquer: The cover is lacquered externally in a rich red, a color often associated with royalty and prestige in Persian art.
- Floral Decoration: The red surface of the cover is adorned with hand-painted floral decoration, featuring a variety of flowers and foliage. These floral motifs are executed with delicate brushstrokes and vibrant colors.
