This cast iron inkwell commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Crane Company, based in Chicago, Illinois. The lid is embossed with the word “CRANE,” and the dates “1855” and “1915” are prominently displayed on each side, marking the company’s milestone years.
In the center, there is a molded object in relief marked “Crane 250.” Given the Crane Company’s specialization in valves and fittings, this object is likely a representation of one of their products—a valve. The grooves on three sides of the inkwell served as pen rests.
The underside is embossed with “Crane Co. Valves Fittings,” further emphasizing the company’s core business. These inkwells were likely used for advertising purposes and could have been given to clients or employees as commemorative gifts to celebrate the company’s anniversary. The Crane Company is still in business. They continue to operate as a manufacturer of highly engineered industrial products.
Estimated value: $85 – Sold for $72 in February 2025 / Sold for $242 (!) in July 2025
