Cushman & Denison Manufacturing Company, also known as C&D Manufacturing Co., was a New York-based company that produced various items, including inkwells. One of their notable products is the GEM inkwell. The pressed glass base has two reservoirs for ink. The covers (one red, one black – made of a hard rubber) fit over the reservoirs and, when pushed with the pen, rotate open or closed. The front of the inkstand has three sections for nibs, stamps, etc. and notches to hold three pens. The glass base is impressed “MADE IN USA – MAY 30, 1911 – GEM PAT NOV. 5, 1912”. On the inside of the lids: “The GEM – PAT. NOV. 5.1912 – C. & D. MGF. CO. – N.Y. U.S.A.”
Another inkwell added – a “single” with the same swivel lid.
