Nock’s Patent blown glass inkwell with original ornate spelter metal lid. The thick & clear glass, which has slight interior residue from use, has a ground top lip (as made). The top interior lip of the glass where it was ground shows a few fractures inside of the glass. This area, which is only visible when the lid is lifted up, is smooth to the touch. These flaws most likely occurred in the making when the metal lid was attached to the glass. The ornate spelter metal hinged lid has the original bronze plating. The hinged lid is in sound operating condition. The plating shows very little wear on the outside but more wear on the inside of the rim.
This example retains much of its original paper patent informational label. The label which is still attached underneath the base has the following wording: “This Inkstand has Paid the Royalty Under NOCK’S PATENT, For Round Hinges, Issued Dec. 13, 1853. Extended Dec. 16, 1867.”. It includes his facsimile signature: “Geo. W. Nock Esq.” The label has some age browning & some chipping losses to the paper. All the wording on the label is readable.
