This ebonized oak writing box with a pen channel in front and a hinged lid covering compartments for two inkwells and a center storage compartment is marked on the side with a crown and S.O. (Royal Stationery Office). These writing boxes were used by post offices and other government entities.

The two original inkwells have hinged brass lids (with green enameling on the inside of the lids). The lid for each inkwell is marked with a crown and S.O.

The dip pen is original to the box and is marked S. [crown] O. Code No. 49. The original nib, made by C. Brandauer & Co. England, is also marked with the S.[crown]O. Even the eraser is marked S.[crown]O. 39-11 571.
