Raised on four ornate ormolu paw feet, this inkstand was made in the Boulle style with intricately engraved brass and faux tortoiseshell throughout. The inkstand has a pullout drawer on one side, a carrying handle in the middle, two cut glass inkwells and a lidded storage compartment on the opposite side.
This inkstand incorporates the ‘Boulle’ marquetry technique, named after the cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV of France, André-Charles Boulle. The technique is used to create scrolling arabesque decorations all over through brass inlay in ebonized wood.
