This detailed farm scene features a man on a horse, a playful dog behind him. The inkwell is hidden in the mounded spring from which water flows. In the background is a country house with windows, a dormer, chimney, gables, and an overhanging roof on which birds have lit. A pulley for a well is attached to the house. The horse with rider pulls out and can be used as a seal stamp. A staff is a pen handle. The piece is signed “A. Giroux”. Alphonse Giroux (1775-1848).

At one time, this piece may have been designed as a music box, considering the wood base and the possible keyhole under the dormer.
