Origin Iran / Persia
Date or Era 13th century

Part of the Islamic Art Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), it was made with stone-paste, glazed and luster painted. It dates to the 13th century and is attributed to Iran, Kashan.

Stone-paste is a type of pottery in which ground glass (quartz or other siliceous material) is added to clay to reduce its fusion temperature. An organic compound such as gum or glue may be added for binding. The resulting mixtures can be fired at a lower temperature than clay alone. A glaze is then applied to the surface.
