On the top surface is inlaid a mosaic parquetry of iridescent glass over which are set four scarabs, all facing towards sphere. The sides of the body are cast with four scarabs, all facing towards sphere. The inkstand has a square base with depressed, curving sides with a lip at the outer edge to serve as pen holders. In front, a curved portion of base pulls out to reveal a shallow drawer.
