This cast iron inkstand is characterized by its elaborate detailing. The handle is formed by two stylized dolphins with their bodies curving upwards and their tails intertwined at the apex. Flanking the central handle on the left and right sides are the two inkwells. These are integrated into the overall design, with a circular shaped form, and are fitted with lift-off lids. The inkstand has pen trays located at the front and back. These are elongated, shallow depressions designed to hold writing implements.

The inkstand is marked for the Ernest Georg Zimmermann Company in Hanau, Germany, and the design is attributed to the sculptor Rudolf Mayer (1846-1916). The trade stamp on the piece dates it between 1856 and 1885.
