This is a novelty inkwell in the form of a wooden hat.
Overall Appearance and Material:
- Wood Construction: The inkwell is crafted from burl wood, with intricate, swirling grain patterns visible across its surface (especially on the lid and brim).
- Hat Form: The inkwell cleverly mimics the shape of a hat, with a distinct cylindrical crown (the main body of the inkwell) and a wide, flat brim (the base or stand for the inkwell).
- Metal Ribbon: A decorative metal ribbon, possibly pewter, encircles the base of the hat’s crown. This ribbon has a textured, almost folded or pleated appearance, giving it the look of fabric, and features stylized “bow” elements at the back.
Functionality and Interior:
- Hinged Lid: The top of the hat (the crown) is hinged, allowing it to lift upwards to reveal the ink reservoir beneath.
- Glass Liner: Inside the wooden well, there is a removable glass ink liner, which serves as the actual container for the ink. The glass liner is topped with a silver-plated metal rim.
