This silverplated inkstand’s rectangular base features ornate edges and elaborate engravings. Flanking the center storage box are two matching inkwells, made of cut glass with silver lids. The lids have a distinctive pointed design. The central storage box is the focal point of the piece, with a lid topped by a figurine of a boy reclining with a tablet.

The underside of the inkstand is marked with the inscription: “Mappin Brothers / 222 Regent St / London Bridge,” identifying it as a creation by the renowned silversmiths Mappin Brothers of London.

Mappin Brothers has a rich history rooted in the craftsmanship of silverware and cutlery. The company was established in Sheffield, England, in 1843, evolving from Joseph Mappin’s cutlery business. Sheffield was renowned for its expertise in metalwork, and Mappin Brothers quickly gained success, opening their first London store at 17 Fore Street in 1849. This marked the beginning of their expansion, with additional stores in Moorgate and King William Street.

The Mappin family played a significant role in the company’s growth, with Jonathan Mappin’s descendants continuing the tradition of excellence in silverware. Over time, Mappin Brothers became synonymous with high-quality craftsmanship and elegant designs, catering to affluent British society. Their legacy is intertwined with the broader history of Mappin & Webb, another branch of the family business that expanded internationally and gained royal recognition.
