This Victorian-era inkstand features two sculpted stag heads with horns. The silverwork is clearly marked by John Round & Sons of Sheffield, England. The most striking element is the large, naturally curved set of stag horns that extend upward and outward from the heads. The silver base, with floral and scrollwork patterns, features two circular, dished sections, each with elaborate, cast ornamentation. The central section supports the inkwell and has a pen holder, while the outer section holds an amber glass bottle-shaped inkwell.
This inkstand is a quintessential example of Victorian-era novelty silver. It reflects the Victorian fascination with naturalism, taxidermy, and sporting themes. The combination of realistic animal forms with functional objects like inkstands was popular during this period.
