This Roycroft inkwell is made from hammered copper in the Arts and Crafts style. Its sturdy construction and minimalist design are characteristic of the Roycroft community’s aesthetic.
- Material and Construction: The inkwell is primarily made of copper. The surfaces are hand-hammered, visible through the subtle indentations and texture across the body and lid. This hammering is a hallmark of the Arts and Crafts movement, emphasizing handcrafted quality. The inkwell has a square form.
- Lid and Trefoil Design: The inkwell features a fitted, hinged lid. The top of the lid also displays the hammered texture and is adorned with a central, raised trefoil design. This trefoil, which appears to be a stylized three-lobed or clover-leaf shape, was applied to the lid.
- Interior and Inkwell Liner: When the lid is opened, it reveals a circular opening holding a clear glass inkwell insert.
- Roycroft Mark: On the bottom of the inkwell, the Roycroft orb and cross mark is impressed. This mark, resembling a cross within a circle, is the signature of the Roycroft community founded by Elbert Hubbard in East Aurora, New York.
