This ornate gilded metal inkwell exhibits a sculptural aesthetic characteristic of the Rococo Revival style, popular in the 19th century.

Overall Appearance and Material: The inkwell is made of metal, coated with a gilt finish that gives it a lustrous golden appearance. The form is asymmetrical and  curvilinear, typical of the Rococo period, with abundant scrollwork and naturalistic motifs.

Design and Decoration:

  • Rococo Revival Style: The inkwell’s design is heavily influenced by the Rococo style (mid-18th century), which experienced a revival in the 19th century. This is evident in the:
    • Asymmetrical composition: The piece is not perfectly symmetrical, with an emphasis on flowing lines and curves rather than rigid balance.
    • Extensive Scrollwork (C-scrolls and S-scrolls): The entire exterior of the inkwell, including the base and the lid, is adorned with intricate, three-dimensional scrolling motifs. These are often C-shaped or S-shaped scrolls, giving the piece a sense of movement.
  • Inkwell Components:
    • Hinged Lid: The top of the inkwell is a domed, hinged lid that lifts to reveal the ink reservoir. The lid itself is decorated with concentric scrolls and fluting, culminating in a central, highly raised, sculpted finial.
    • Glass Liner: The inkwell holds a removable clear glass insert.
