The entire inkstand, including the base, inkwell, and lid, is made of clear pressed glass. The pressing technique has allowed for intricate, molded patterns to be incorporated into the glass itself.

Components and Design:

  • Inkwell with Swirl Pattern: The central feature is the inkwell, which has a distinctive swirl or twisted fluted pattern on its square body. This pattern creates a dynamic visual effect.
  • Matching Swirl Lid: The inkwell is topped with a matching glass lid that also features the same swirl pattern, along with scalloped edges. The lid likely sits snugly over the inkwell opening, protecting the ink from dust and evaporation.
  • Round Glass Base: The inkwell sits securely on a round, scalloped-edge glass base. This base is extensively decorated with flowers and scrolls in relief. The intricate floral motifs and flowing scrollwork are deeply molded into the glass, creating a visually rich surface.

This inkstand is a nice example of mass-produced yet elegant glassware from the late 19th century.
