This is a whimsical porcelain inkwell in the form of Pierrot, a classic character from the Commedia dell’arte. The figure of Pierrot is seated, forming the main body of the inkwell. He is depicted with a white costume featuring large, stylized sleeves or ruffs at the shoulders and a row of gilded buttons down the front. Pierrot has a black cap covering his head, a pale face with delicate features, and small, red lips. His expression is typically melancholic or slightly wistful.
A prominent, gilded circular container with a lid sits in front of Pierrot, integrated into the overall design. This gilded vessel serves as the actual inkwell, holding the ink. The lid has a small, rounded knob for easy removal. The entire Pierrot figure and the inkwell rest on a circular white porcelain base or saucer. The underside is marked “Limoges”.
