The base of this inkstand is made of marble with dark hues and prominent white and gold veining, characteristic of Portoro marble. The central figure, a Middle Eastern or Orientalist merchant, is depicted standing in a marketplace, surrounded by teapots, suggesting he is selling these wares. The attire and overall style of the figure align with Orientalist art, which often romanticized and depicted Middle Eastern and North African cultures. He stands on a polychrome textured carpet with intricate designs. Flanking the central scene are two bronze hinged inkwells designed to resemble hexagonal Moroccan tables.
