Standing upright with imposing presence, this finely cast bear figure grasps a semi-circular gilt bronze. Its hinged head opens to reveal a hidden circular inkwell crafted in polished brass.
The surface of the bear’s fur showcases the extraordinary casting technique perfected at Nikolai’s foundries in Sokolov, Russia. The lost-wax model underwent a unique chemical treatment that caused the wax surface to puff before casting—resulting in an exceptionally textured, lifelike finish that breathes vitality into the figure.
True to Nikolai’s reclusive and meticulous nature, this work bears neither foundry mark nor artist signature, as he famously forbade such identifiers during his lifetime. The piece stands as a testament to his dedication to artistry over attribution, and to the exceptional quality that defined his limited body of work.
