This metal inkstand features a central inkwell flanked by stylized serpent figures. The metal is pewter or a similar lead-based alloy.
Design and Decoration:
-
- Central Inkwell: The inkwell itself is positioned centrally. It consists of a square-based glass inkwell held within a decorative metal housing. The metal housing around the glass liner features molded, organic, and relief patterns with flowing lines and stylized swirls.
- Serpent Figures: The most distinctive feature of this inkstand are the two serpent figures that rise symmetrically from the base, coiling upwards and backwards to frame the central inkwell. Each serpent is detailed with scales, a distinct head, and coiled bodies. They appear to be in a watchful or guardian pose.
- Pen Tray/Base: The front portion of the inkstand forms a long, shallow, rectangular tray with rounded ends. This serves as a pen tray, designed to hold writing instruments. The rim of this tray is decorated with a continuous series of bead-like motifs.
- Patented Lid: The inkwell is topped with a metal lid that is hinged and designed to open to access the ink. The top of the lid features a highly detailed relief sculpture. The hinge is marked with a patent date.
Markings:
- Underside of the Inkwell Base: The underside shows impressed lettering.
- The text is oriented vertically and reads “VAID, L.D.”.
- Below “L.D.”, there is a small, unclear mark.
- The square plate surrounding this text also has stylized clover or trefoil shapes in each of its four corners.
