The base of this French inkstand is made from a rectangular slab of green marble, Verde Alpi, characterized by its deep green hue and intricate, contrasting white veining. The marble base rests on ornate ormolu (gilt bronze) feet at each corner.
The top of the marble base features a recessed, elongated platform situated in the center. This indentation is designed to serve as a pen rest.
Flanking the central pedestal are two round inkwells. Each inkwell is topped with a hinged bronze lid. The lids are embellished with decorative ormolu elements, and cover the original glass inserts inside.
Dominating the center of the inkstand is a prominent pedestal, also made of the same green marble with white veining, echoing the base. Perched atop this pedestal is a magnificent, large ormolu bronze eagle. The eagle is depicted with its wings outstretched in a powerful pose. The intricate detailing of the eagle’s feathers and its commanding presence make it the focal point of the entire composition. The ormolu bronze, with its golden sheen, provides a striking contrast against the dark green marble.
