This vibrant Gouda art pottery inkwell was produced by Studio Plateelkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH). The inkwell is hand-painted with a characteristically bold and colorful polychrome design. The palette includes vivid shades of green, blue, yellow, and red. The patterns are stylized abstract motifs, typical of the Gouda art pottery tradition, with flowing lines and a dynamic interplay of color.
The inkwell has a matte finish, which is a hallmark of the Rhodian process developed by PZH in 1910. This matte glaze gives the piece a soft, velvety texture and enhances the richness of the hand-painted colors. The inkwell has a cylindrical form for holding the ink and sits on an integrated saucer base.
The bottom of the inkwell is marked:
- The pattern number and name: “84 Corona”, identifying this specific design within PZH’s extensive catalog.
- The PZH logo, a recognizable mark indicating the maker.
- The year mark: a rhombus for 1922, providing a precise date of manufacture.
- The artist’s monogram, identifying the individual who hand-painted this piece.
