French Sterling Silver Inkstand

This French sterling silver inkstand has three separate parts:

  1. Base: The saucer-shaped base features radial ribbing and a rim adorned with intricate vegetal decorations, including apples, pears, grapes, and wheat.
  2. Inkwell: The two-handled inkwell sits atop the base. It has a cylindrical shape with vertical ribbing and beaded details.
  3. Lid: The lid is topped with an ornate floral finial.

The inkstand is marked with post-1838 French hallmarks used in Paris for 950/1000 silver, indicating its high silver content. The silversmith’s mark “J W” with two stars is present, and the piece is embossed with “Froment-Meurice” on the inner rim, linking it to the renowned French silversmith François-Désiré Froment-Meurice.
