This is a French cloisonné enamel inkstand:
- Materials and Construction: The inkstand has a base composed of polished onyx and gilt bronze. The onyx forms the main platform, showcasing its characteristic smooth finish and natural banding, in translucent shades of cream. Gilt bronze elements forming decorative feet, borders, and mounts, complement the onyx.
- Central Inkwell: The focal point of the piece is the single, hinged inkwell, positioned prominently at the center of the base. The inkwell’s lid is topped with a decorative finial.
- Cloisonné Enamel Work: The inkwell’s body and its hinged lid are finished with cloisonné enamel. This skilled technique involves forming decorative compartments with fine metal wires (cloisons) on the bronze surface, which are then meticulously filled with vibrant enamel pastes and fired. The patterns are elaborate, featuring delicate floral motifs and geometric accents. The color palette incorporates blues, turquoise, white, and crimson, all clearly delineated by the fine gilt bronze wirework.
