This Arts & Crafts style inkwell shows a significant loss of its original silver plating. The inkwell rests on a circular base with a raised and textured surface. The main body of the inkwell is cylindrical and exhibits a hand-hammered texture across its surface. A hinged lid covers the opening of the inkwell. This lid features an asymmetrical, organic form, reminiscent of a stylized leaf. The lid is attached with a simple, functional hinge. A small tab facilitates the opening of the lid.
The bottom of the inkwell bears the marking “Connell / 83 Cheapside” along with the number 5259. This inscription points to James Connell & Sons, a reputable firm of art dealers, goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers located at this prominent address in the City of London. While not direct manufacturers of every item they sold, James Connell & Sons were known for commissioning and retailing high-quality goods in the artistic styles of their time, including the Arts & Crafts movement.
