This is an ornate antique French double inkstand, dating to the late 19th century, crafted from gilt metal. There are two inkwells topped with hinged lids with a pyramidal form. Standing prominently at either side of the inkwells are two figures of Setters or Retrievers. These lean and athletic dogs are depicted in a poised stance.
The inkstand incorporates a pen holder into the pierced and scrolling gilt metal backplate structure. The entire inkstand rests on scrolling gilt metal feet. The surfaces are richly decorated with cast details, including floral motifs, scrolls, and other stylized elements. The pierced and scrolling backplate features a central urn and floral arrangement. The bottom of the inkstand bears the foundry marks “DL N=27 Depose.”
