This is a French gilded bronze inkstand, dating from the early to mid-19th century, exhibiting a refined Neoclassical or Empire style. The central feature is a sculptural group depicting a winged cherub or putto playfully riding a stylized dolphin. Flanking this central sculpture on either side are two simple trumpet-shaped candle holders.

The front of the inkstand features a long, rectangular recessed area with raised edges, intended to hold pens and other writing implements. The front panel of this pen holder is adorned with applied gilded bronze ornamentation, featuring a continuous swag or floral. Lifting the cover, with the cherub and dolphin sculpture remaining in place, reveals the functional interior of the inkstand. It is divided into three compartments: an inkwell, a sand shaker, and a compartment intended for storing writing accessories.
