This inkstand is predominantly made of ormolu, which is gilded bronze, giving it a rich, lustrous golden finish that highlights the intricate details of the casting and chasing. It rests upon a substantial base made of polished onyx. The main body of the inkstand is shaped like a gondola. It features a high, elaborately scrolled prow and stern, adorned with stylized foliate motifs.
Positioned centrally within the gondola is a dark patinated bronze figure of a cherub gondolier. The cherub stands erect, holding a long bronze pole as if propelling the gondola through water. Located at either end of the gondola are two covered inkwells. These are also crafted from ormolu and feature domed lids with ornate finials.
