This inkwell is cast in bronze in the form of a bird with an elongated beak which serves as a pen holder. The bird’s plumage is meticulously rendered with fine details suggesting individual feathers. The bird has small, round eyes. Its feet are realistically sculpted with claws.
The upper section of the bird’s feathers, along its back, is hinged. This hinged portion forms a lid that can be lifted to reveal the inkwell within the bird’s body. When closed, the hinged feathers seamlessly blend with the rest of the bird’s form, concealing the inkwell. The bottom right foot of the bird is marked “M S”.
