This inkstand is primarily made of bronze. Bronze forms the base, the inkwell housing, and the two sculptural cherubs. Striking decorative elements are the panels of cloisonné enamel, which provide vibrant color and intricate patterns.
Base and Cloisonné Panels:
- The base is a rectangular or slightly contoured bronze tray with a raised edge.
- The flat central area of the base, intended to rest pens, is adorned with a large cloisonné enamel panel. This panel showcases a complex, symmetrical floral and geometric design in a rich array of colors.
- Dominant colors include various shades of blue (particularly a vibrant turquoise and a deeper royal blue), cream/ivory, green, red/pink, and purple, all outlined by thin metal wires (cloisons).
- The patterns feature stylized leaves, blossoms, and intricate scrolls, creating a rich tapestry of color and texture.
Inkwell Component:
- At the center of the inkstand, rising from the base, is the inkwell. This is an urn-shaped bronze vessel, also heavily decorated with cloisonné enamel.
- The inkwell’s body features similar intricate floral and scrolling patterns to the base, executed in the same vibrant cloisonné palette.
- It has two decorative scroll-shaped handles on either side.
- The inkwell is topped with a hinged circular lid, also decorated with cloisonné enamel, and surmounted by a pinecone-shaped finial made of gilded bronze, serving as a handle.
Cherub Figures:
- Flanking the central inkwell on either side are two gilded bronze cherub figures.
- Each cherub is posed, appearing to sit or recline on a stylized bronze scroll or pedestal that connects them to the main inkwell housing.
- The cherubs have finely detailed features, including hair, hands, and feet, and their gold finish contrasts beautifully with the colorful cloisonné.
