This inkstand rests on a rectangular base of polished agate with beveled edges. The central element is a gilt bronze bear standing upright. The bear has a textured fur-like surface and holds a pot of honey in its paws. The honey is dripping down from the pot onto a gilt bronze, fence-like structure positioned in front of the bear. This fence serves as an integrated pen holder.
There are three inkwells:
- The Bear’s Torso: The upper part of the bear is hinged at the shoulders, allowing it to open and reveal a hidden inkwell within its body.
- Two Tree Stumps: Flanking the bear on either side are two gilt bronze tree stumps. These are realistically rendered with bark texture, exposed roots at the base, and sawed-off tops. The tops of these tree stumps are hinged covers that lift to reveal additional inkwells inside. Each of these covers is adorned with a small bear finial.
