This inkstand is a nice example of Art Deco design, combining functional desk accessories with a sleek, sculptural element. It features a German Shepherd dog figurine atop a marble base.
- Overall Aesthetic & Period: The inkstand’s clean lines, geometric forms, and the stylized depiction of the dog all point to the Art Deco period (roughly 1920s-1930s).
- Marble Base: The foundation of the inkstand is a marble base. Its shape is trapezoidal, appearing wider at the front and tapering slightly towards the back, having subtly angled sides. The marble itself is a dark, richly variegated stone, featuring prominent tones of green and black throughout its veining and pattern.
- German Shepherd Figurine: Dominating the top of the marble base is a metal figurine of a German Shepherd dog. The dog is depicted in a watchful pose, with its ears erect.
- Inkwell: Positioned on the marble base is a pyramid-like or tapering structure made of the same patinated metal as the dog figurine. This faceted, tapering form contributes significantly to the inkstand’s Art Deco aesthetic. It is designed to hold a clear glass insert.
- Pen Channel/Rest: The front edge of the marble base features a shallow, elongated indentation. This serves as a pen channel, providing a resting place for one or more pens.
