This is a double inkstand with a clear association with The American Legion, a prominent veterans’ organization. It is made of metal over wood.

Form and Structure: The inkstand has a rectangular base. Rising from this base are two identical glass inkwells.

  • Inkwell Components: There are two square openings, each housing a glass inkwell, each covered with a metal lid.
  • Central Pen/Accessory Holder: In the front are channels to hold pens.
  • American Legion Emblem: A large, circular American Legion emblem is prominently displayed. This emblem features the distinctive American Legion starburst design with “AMERICAN LEGION” clearly readable around the perimeter.

It’s probable that this inkstand was produced either for official American Legion offices, as a commemorative item for members, or as a presentation piece.

History of The American Legion?

The American Legion is the largest veterans’ service organization in the United States. Here’s a breakdown of key information:

  • Founding: It was chartered by Congress in 1919 in Paris, France, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces after World War I. Its purpose was to support returning veterans.
  • Mission: The Legion’s mission is encapsulated in its Preamble to the Constitution, which outlines its core values:
    • Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation: Advocating for veterans’ benefits, healthcare, and support programs.
    • National Security: Supporting a strong national defense.
    • Americanism: Promoting patriotism, respect for the flag, and civics education.
    • Children & Youth: Sponsoring youth programs like Boys State/Nation, American Legion Baseball, and oratorical contests.
  • Membership: Membership is open to honorably discharged veterans who served during specific periods of armed conflict recognized by the U.S. government.
  • Structure: The Legion operates through a hierarchical structure of national, state, and local “posts.” Local posts are the heart of the organization, serving as community hubs for veterans and their families.
  • Impact: The American Legion has been highly influential in shaping veterans’ policies and benefits, including playing a key role in the creation of the G.I. Bill after World War II. They continue to be a powerful advocacy group for veterans’ rights and community service.
  • Emblem: The distinctive emblem, as seen on the inkstand, is a patriotic starburst design and the words “AMERICAN LEGION.”
